Pentone Postcards May 14 2013

Our friends at Asbury & Asbury have produced a lovely set of postcards to coincide with After Hours, which starts at the Jerwood Space today. The set pays homage to the famous colour tone swatches, but with swatches of writing tones. Read more about it in the Asbury's excellent blog here: http://asburyandasbury.typepad.com/blog/2013/05/pentone-boxset.html Thanks for the very kind mention and subliminal spreading of the Polite word.

Framed prints of the swatches will be on display at the Jerwood Space until 23rd June: http://jerwoodvisualarts.org/jerwood-encounter and you can buy the box sets here: http://asburyandasbury.tictail.com/product/pentone-boxset

Mustang Margaritas interview May 04 2013

Mustang Margaritas is our new postcard box featuring images that document a rather rock n’roll road trip involving Two Door Cinema Club singer, Alex J.Trimble and his best friend, Jamie William, a Belfast-based photographer.

If you'd like to know more about the trip and how the work came about you're in luck; Tia Clarke has interviewed Alex and Jamie for Spindle Magazine here:

Featured Stockist: Rise April 29 2013

We love records at Polite HQ. Music is properly listened to, and the sleeves are poured over and discussed. One of our stockists, Rise in Bristol, is a great source of good records. Here's a little film they made from this years Record Store Day which sums up the vinyl passion nicely.

David Shrigley on Vice April 05 2013

We love the strictly secular Sunday Sermons our friends at The School of Life run. They ask cultural mavericks to give us their take on the values we should live by today. The virtues to cling to or the vices to be wary of in our complex world.

Upcoming sermons include Jon Ronson on Humiliation and Carol Dweck on Being Perfect, and we thought you might like to have a look at one of last years Sermons – David Shrigley on Vice.

A Studio Visit with Magda Archer March 20 2013

Whenever we visit Magda Archer in her studio we're always impressed – as well as the tea and biscuits – by the space. It's a fascinating collection of objects, inspiration and memorabilia. So, we were pleased to read that Eloise Moran shares our enthusiasm in her interview for the Opening Ceremony blog this week.

You can the interview here: http://www.openingceremony.us/entry.asp?pid=7296

And see more of Magda's painting here: http://magdaarcher.tumblr.com

Colour Code March 15 2013

The theme for the current issue of the excellent Upon Paper is colour, and in it Paul Hetherington interviews Peter Saville about his colour alphabet.

It's 30 years since the release of Blue Monday this month, so you'll have been reading and hearing a lot about it, but have you ever wanted to know more about the colour code along the edge of the 12" release?

Factory connoisseurs will know all about the code – in fact, I was once told by Peter Saville that he'd received a note from a fan pointing out a spelling mistake in the colours the day after one release – but this, as with any interview with Saville is an interesting and delightful read.

Here's the interview: http://www.uponpaper.com/features/deciphered-peter-saville/

Smithsfest March 13 2013

Having spend the last year working on our new postcard box set - Morrissey & The Smiths by Kevin Cummins - we're looking forward to Smithsfest at the ICA later this month.

The two day festival will include talks, performance, art and film screenings and will survey of the cultural impact of The Smiths, one of the most iconic, seminal and controversial bands in the history of pop music.

Highlights for me include double-bill of A Taste of Honey and The Leather Boys introduced by Rita Tushingham - two films she stars in and which were a huge influence on The Smiths - and the barber who'll be on hand to provide the perfect quiff.

Find out more from the ICA's website: http://www.ica.org.uk

The Life and Times of William Callahan March 05 2013

We’re big fans of Bill Callahan here at Polite and, in fact, our copy of Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle has it’s own special place right next to the office turntable. The cover features an enigmatic picture of five horses in the mist which has always intrigued me, so I was pleased to discover where the image had come from.

In 2008, Chris Taylor had sent an unsolicited email to Drag City Records with a proposal: a book of photographs of and around Bill Callahan. Taylor found himself traveling 658 miles east, from his home in Victoria, B.C. to meet Callahan and discuss the idea: that he would travel to Callahan's home in Austin, TX and photograph him every other day for a month. Along the drive Taylor took some Polaroids – one of which, the picture of the horses in the mist, was chosen for the album cover.

A book of photos titled "The Life and Times of William Callahan" is the result of Taylor's time in Austin. It's a series of images that are as much about Callahan's songs as they are about him. Still and Poetic and beautifully engaging.

You can see more of Taylor's work and get hold of one of the books here:  http://www.winnersblues.com/book/

Here are some images from the book – courtesy of the photographer.

Sixty Second Films by Bill Drummond February 05 2013

From Penkiln Burn:

Over the past sixteen years Bill Drummond has turned down all requests to appear on television, bar one disastrous occasion.

In February 2012, he was invited to take part in the filming of the BBC series Punk Britannia. Later in the year he was invited to discuss Stockhausen with Will Gompertz on the Ten O’clock News. Although he turned down both of these an idea began to evolve. The idea being, in future every time he received a request from a TV programme he would respond by providing them with a Sixty Second film clip on the subject matter in question.

As a trial run, he made two retrospective clips in response to the Punk Britannia request and two in response to the Stockhausen / Ten O’clock News request.

He also received an enquiry about being a guest on The Great Album Showdown with Danny Baker to be broadcast this week. Again Drummond refused the offer but responded by making Singles Versus Albums in Sixty Seconds.

All five of these Sixty Second films are now available to be watched on the MEDIA section of the Penkiln Burn site.

Harry Hill - My Hobby December 12 2012

Harry Hill’s hobby is painting. He’s been doing it for about 20 years, and although he doesn’t consider himself an artist he’s a pretty good painter.

This collection of postcards brings together some of of his best and most intriguing works - reproduced for the fist time and presented in a lovely hand finished box set.

“I’ve been doing the paintings for a long time. They’re probably an extension of my act — a slightly absurd way of looking at the world.”

Kevin Cummins - Joy Division Box Set November 30 2012

Joy Division pioneered a genre of music and defined the look and sound of the post-punk era, and thirty years after the suicide of their lead singer Ian Curtis, they remain one of the most influential rock bands to have come out of England. Kevin Cummins began his career just as the band formed, and this postcard box set collects 20 of his images of the band—sensitive photographs that capture their quiet introspection offstage, their close relationships as bandmates, and Curtis’s legendary energy in live performances.
